Modified justice

Well, we got our bikes... intact, no damage (that we can see, just sand inside the handlebar grips that we already dumped out), just a few extra dozens of miles or so.

The perps were a couple of 13 year olds that ran away from home a day or two ago, apparently spent the night in the woods around my house, and hit the road planning to head for Atlanta... but going the complete wrong direction. The deputies informed us that they appeared to come from good families who reported them as runaways and they did not seem to have a history of criminal acts, so this is an odd thing to do. The reason for them running away seems a minor reason for running away, so we are concerned that there may be underlying issues, but the deputy said that the families would be checked out to make sure there is not an issue with child abuse or anything that motivated the running away. We mentioned us being "Big Brother" to the kids, while we want them punished - we demand they be punished, we prefer probation and community service to juvie, so they discussed possible senarios and outcomes for the boys in court with us. We intend to go to court, however, we are going to look into the Big Brother, Little Brother program and see about us mentoring these kids. This is a possible, but courts and the parents may have an issue with the victims being the mentors, but I think having the victims wanting you to be a better person will show them that they messed up but we believe they can be better. Hopefully this will be an anamoly on the boys criminal records and will be chaulked up to a couple of kids with too much time on thier hands and not enough common sense. We will also be remaining in contact with the sherrif's department and the prosecutor on the case to work on the best outcome for the boys.

I wouldn't worry about juvie, they won't put kids away for stealing a couple of bikes unfortunately. I'm amazed that you got them back, that's awesome to hear. Let us know what happens.
